In the residential DIY market there are a lot of products and flat roof systems available but none of the are as superior as an EPDM roofing system.
Firestone EPDM is a product that has both ease of fitting and produces a quality finish comparable to a professionally installed flat roof. In the present economic climate more and more people are deciding to install or repair flat roofs themselves and with Firestone EPDM this is possible. EPDM Rubber Roofing is a cost effective system when comparable to other flat roofing membranes, and will outlast the vast majority of other roofing materials like traditional felt. Advantages of EPDM is that it is easy to fit, comes in a single seamless sheet, is resistant to UV radiation, is highly flexible, has a clean finish and is designed to do the job whereas some of the disadvantages of felt are that it is hard to install through DIY, increased vulnerability at seams, can be damaged by sunlight, vegetation growth on surface, short lifespan and needs to be applied via a hot torch or bitumen.
So if your flat roof is leaking, in need of repair or you are looking to replace your existing flat roof then Firestone EPDM is an affordable, cost effective, environmentally friendly easy solution. Firestone RubberCover is an ideal, high performing system for a variety of flat roofing applications around your home.
Whether you have a FLAT ROOF, EXTENSION, VERANDA, DORMA ROOF, GARDEN SHED, MOBILE HOME, GARAGE, GRANNY ANNEXE, OUTSIDE OFFICE, PORCH, SUMMER HOUSE, EXTENSION, POOL HOUSING, CAR PORT, SHED or BOX GUTTER then EPDM roofing is to suit you.
Today, single ply rubber roofing has become the prime choice when it comes to flat roof replacement with EPDM being the number 1 choice.
The most crucial aspect to the reliability and durability of single ply rubber roofs is the method of attaching seams together as this is where 99% of flat roof leaks happen.
Firestone EPDM membrane can be cut to any size in a single sheet which is the most important factor in the longevity of a flat roof installation. In theory, the wider the membrane is, the less seam you have, therefor reducing the possibility of leaks. Firestone EPDM can be ordered a single seamless piece of rubber up to 15m x 30m.
One of the clear advantages Firestone EPDM rubber roofing has over felt is its tolerance to high temperatures. While U.V. light can cause felt to degrade far quicker than rubber, EPDM rubber roofing systems also provide excellent weather resistance as well as sheet flexibility and high elongation.
EPDM rubber can also be formed to seal round difficult items such as upstands, skylights and downpipes which can be found on domestic flat roofs. It also proves far more cost effective than felt with a life expectancy of 50 years+ you would not have to worry about replacing your roof again.
It is also an ideal material in troublesome roof gutters and gulleys, where there is not adequate space or fall to properly install traditional lead. In fact there are many surfaces not immediately apparent where
Firestone EPDM can solve your rubber roof needs.
EPDM is one of the most sustainable and environmentally responsible flat roofing materials used today in the roofing industry. Its successful track record of superior overall performance in low cycle costs. Less frequent replacement results in decreased building disruptions and reduced impact on the environment.
The initial production of the membrane has a low embodied energy number (the amount of energy required to implement a product from material extraction, manufacturing and installation). In addition several other components (such as primers and adhesives) were developed for use with the EPDM membrane to reduce VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emissions during installation.
No further surface treatment is needed once the Firestone EPDM is adhered and general housekeeping in the form of removal of debris and leaves etc is all that is required.
In laboratory testing Firestone EPDM was subjected to the most severe heat aging where samples were subjected to temperatures of 240 degrees Fahrenheit for four weeks.
Also, in several studies field samples were collected from various geographic locations after years of exposure and in both cases (laboratory and field) the physical properties of the samples exceeded the original specification. Presently there are numerous Firestone EPDM installations throughout colder regions in the U.S. (i.e. Alaska, Minnesota) as well as in the hot and humid climates of southern Florida and Texas.
This material will withstand and not shatter in extreme cold temperatures and remains flexible under severe thermal shock where evenings/nights are extremely cold and days extremely hot.
Expansion and contraction, ponding, moisture, thermal shock and temperature extremes are all factors that promote premature degradation of a roofing material.
The elongation and low temperature flexibility of Firestone EPDM membranes accommodate building movement in various climatic conditions without stressing the material. Its moisture absorption resistance allows the material to be installed in assemblies with lesser slope then other single ply products and makes it tolerable to incidental ponding and deflection.
Unlike built up roofing Firestone EPDM membrane does not contain organic material that can decay as a result of moisture caused by condensation or leaks.
With many Firestone EPDM installations exceeding 40 years of exposure in the field under various climatic conditions, none of the materials have shown alarming signs of degradation.
It is difficult to accurately predict but studies have shown Firestone EPDM flat roofs as having a potential life expectancy of 50 years.
Firestone EPDM roofing systems offers one of the better value systems in low slope and flat roof market. While installation varies from roof to roof the cost per square metre, when taking longevity and sustainability of the product into consideration, makes it one of the most cost effective for both installer and customer.
Within the United States EPDM accounts for over 1 billion square feet and represents approximately 35% of the entire roofing market. In Europe the market share is around 12% and growing. Accelerated growth has also been reported in the Middle East and China as well and with these markets expanding exponentially EPDM rubber is becoming a world market leader in flat roofing repair.
Firestone EPDM can be purchased online, or from our partners Roofing Warehouse.
